In brief

Optimising consumption of raw materials and energy, transport logistics and waste management: these are the major thrusts underpinning PPR’s action in favour of the environment.
After developing a reporting structure in 2004 ensuring a genuine and practical visibility of the Group's environmental impacts, the main challenge in 2005 had been to improve the reliability of data feedback, extend the scope of the data and establish reporting sheets for qualitative data. The year 2006 is in keeping with the two previous years as the Group has continued its efforts to improve the reliability of data feedback and the calculation of environmental indicators and define indicators representing the challenges faced by each company.
Environmental reporting
In 2006, the Group companies conducted a new campaign to collect environmental data. With extremely stringent data checking and information reporting, this system now provides PPR with highly representative indicators to coordinate its environmental management. Seven major themes have been identified for exhaustive reporting of the Group’s environmental performance:
- 2 Qualitative themes: product and environment-management policies; - 5 Quantitative themes: raw-material consumption, transport flows, waste production, energy and water consumption. |
Raw material consumption
PPR is a major paper consumer worldwide, notably for the printing of catalogues. Accordingly, the Group pays particular attention to the origin of the wood used to produce them. It also focuses its concern on other raw materials used in all its production.
Waste management
PPR Group companies mainly produce packaging waste, with a very small quantity of hazardous waste. To optimise management of this waste, the Group has introduced a reporting system monitoring the different components of waste produced.
Since 2005, particular attention has been focused on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).
Optimising transport flows
The shipment of goods, a crucial activity for any distributor, is a major generator of greenhouse gases and thus constitutes a key environmental challenge for PPR.
Water and energy consumption
For PPR, electricity use is a major component in adding value to its products (store lighting). It accounts for 67% of the Group’s total energy consumption (12% for fuel). Although not as significant, water consumption is also closely scrutinised…
