The example of sites that have different objectives but are part of the same group:
La Redoute, the number two seller of female clothing and home linens in France. With 18 million customers worldwide, La Redoute is present in 24 countries and is supported by a multi-channel retail approach that combines catalogue, store and Internet sales. Laredoute.fr, the leading French BtoC trading site, not including services, represented nearly 50% of La Redoute's 2007 revenue.
Rushcollection, created in 2000, is a Web site that specialises in selling top of the range fashion products. This entity has managed to concentrate its activities on one major area: more intensive private Internet sales. Rushcollection is one of the few private sale operators that specialises only in the fashion sector: this is what makes it special.
Shopoon, created in 2005 and opened to the public in 2006, is a site that connects surfers with a certain number of e-commerce sites (around sixty), including Redcats Group brands, who are partners and customers of the site.
Success at the heart of a profound change - but it also creates demand
Over and above the example of these sites, we can see a significant change in careers related to the web. For nearly two years now, these careers have been structured around functions that have been defined in an increasingly relevant and significant way.
However, despite these changes, these careers do not seem to be attracting enough for young talent and currently there is significant demand from companies, including Redcats Group.
Apart from technical careers that require extremely specific skills, there is little specialised training for commercial and creative careers in this medium. Business school and design college training programmes are well thought of.
In fact, the internet is a specific media that combines marketing and technology at all times; therefore, we must find candidates who have both a general background and a real passion for technology and working on the internet.
According to Fabrice Berger-Duquene, there are three essential conditions for succeeding in these careers:
- Working in retail means accepting to interact constantly with customers. This means that candidates must like contacts with customers.
- Candidates must be able to love careers that constantly demand creation and innovation.
- Finally, candidates must not shy away from technology, especially internet technology.
Be an actor and active in new technology
In companies, Internet-related jobs are often organised in small teams that require more operational profiles who are not afraid to “roll their sleeves up” and be really active in the field to move forward a medium which is being created.
So, web careers are attractive as they call on an expanding market which is still moving and which consequently is leaving a lot of space for creativity and innovation.
Only the most entrepreneurial and creative profiles will be able to truly succeed in these careers.
